The ant is an earth-bound creature. That is its nature and its destiny. So
what would happen if an ant, which normally crawls on the earth, should wish to
rise up into the air, if it started to dream about being able to fly?
Experience suggests that it is
destined to fail. But is it not possible, that there might just be a
chance, however slight?
INSECT depicts the world as an insect state, in which these tiny
creatures take up the great human aspiration, the dream of flying. But the
dream needs to evolve first. It has to be discovered for it to unfold its magic
- a magic that nobody will be able to resist for long.
And this is how the story of the discovery goes:
One day, the green cricket finds he has new neighbours. The red ants, a
collective of industrious workers, builders and inventors, discover the home
they have long been searching for, and it is right beside the cricket's hut.
The ants set about preparing their new home for the arrival of their queen.
Her majesty arrives and enters her new realm in full pomp and splendour.
Her gigantic body is bulging with her new brood. Life in the insect state goes
back to normal - at least for a while. The ants are completely devoted to their
queen and her eggs - for them, this is the noblest of tasks.
However, even the queen is subordinate to the task of reproducing the
ant species. After she has laid her final egg, she will be at risk, for her
power depends on her ability to reproduce.
At this point, the ageing queen gives birth to a daughter, and behold -
it is a princess with wings! The ants are fascinated, but the queen is
apprehensive and fears for her power and influence. In a fit of anger she cuts
off her child's wings.
But the birth of the little winged princess has given rise to a dream, a
dream that nobody is able to subdue or destroy.
From now on, daily life in the ant court is dominated by increasingly
weird attempts to conquer the air. All prove to be in vain, until one
particular inventor presents his strange flying machine. Convinced that this
will bring the fulfilment of their dream, the entire ant nation becomes
euphoric as all prepare with much merriment and jollity to take off - towards
disaster.
Now it is up to the imagination of the little princess to fulfil their
dream.
